The screen would flash and just kick back to the desktop.<br />The problem turned out to be my video drivers. I had updated the NVIDIA GeoForce 9600 drivers to version 191.07. It looks like <a href="http://easims.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/easims.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=IFE2WFMj&amp;p_accessibility=0&amp;p_redirect=&amp;p_faqid=23473" target="_blank">Sims 3 is incompatible with these drivers</a>. I had to perform these steps:<br />1. Open <b>Control Panel</b>.<br />2. Open <b>Add/Remove Programs</b>.<br />3. Click <b>NVIDIA Drivers</b>.<br />4. Click <b>Remove</b>.<br />5. Restart the computer.<br />6. <a href="http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_190.62_whql.html" target="_blank">Download and install older NVIDIA Drivers</a>.<br />The Sims 3 started working with these drivers installed.
